K9 Sentinel — AI Safety Monitoring for Working Dogs
A rugged AI safety platform for working K9s in vehicle kennels — combining computer vision, environmental sensors, and off-grid communication to detect heatstroke and medical distress when handlers can't maintain line-of-sight. Built at the US Army xTech National Security Hackathon.
K9 Sentinel is a Nedron Labs initiative that started at the 2026 US Army xTech National Security Hackathon — and from a problem I live with personally as a working search-and-rescue K9 handler on a county sheriff’s SAR team.
Heatstroke and undetected medical distress remain among the leading preventable causes of working-dog fatalities. Existing solutions rely almost entirely on temperature alarms — they can’t see a collapse, can’t detect abnormal breathing, and don’t function in the off-grid environments common to border security, SAR, and tactical operations.
The K9 Sentinel platform addresses all three gaps:
- Visual monitoring — kennel camera so handlers can check status remotely, observing posture, activity, and behavior when the dog is out of sight.
- Environmental sensing — temperature and humidity inside the kennel, with alerts when conditions become unsafe.
- AI distress detection — on-device computer vision trained to flag collapse, abnormal inactivity, and breathing-pattern changes; immediate notifications to the handler.
- Off-grid operation — vehicle WiFi, RF / mesh relay, or direct local connection. No cellular dependency.
A working prototype was demoed live at the xTech hackathon in May 2026. Currently iterating with feedback from working-dog handlers and unit leaders toward the first operational build.
